SALINA, Kansas - They’re resilient. They know adversity better than their playbook, and they ended up winning in typical Gulf Coast fashion.

Coach Roonie Scovel said this year’s Gulf Coast women's basketball team was good enough to win the NJCAA national championship. It just needed one of its patented runs to get there, winning 62-61 Saturday night over Central Arizona.

In a year where Gulf Coast rarely trailed and almost never had to come from behind, the Lady Commodores battled back to win three times during the NJCAA tournament heading into the finals against the top-seeded Vaqueras.

Gulf Coast needed a fourth comeback, and it took a 10-4 run late in the second half to secure the school’s second national championship. The Lady Commodores, 36-1, won their first in 2003.

Freshman guard, Ashlee Kelly (Taylor Lakes, VIC), was a key component in Gulf Coast's quarterfinal game, hitting a runner in the lane with 49 seconds remaining in their 64-62 win over 6th-seeded Jefferson College.
